The preliminaries

As kickoff time approaches and the fans start to fill up the stadium, a nervous feeling can be sensed in the booth as well as the stadium. Certain things need to be done not only to ease the tension for the fans but to soothe the participants who will play key roles in tonight's activities.

For the fans, the task is easy: Play classic rock-n-roll and make frivolous announcements. "Will the owner of a green Dodge, please remove your car from the parking lot. We do have stadards here in Sharyland. Oh, I'm sorry, that belongs to one of the referees."

For the booth, it's a totally different situation. Chaos seems to dominate the pregame activities — but with structure. The announcer goes down his list of chores and his precision will alleviate any tension that might be building up in the press box. During a thirty-minute time span, (seven to seven thirty), he will:

  • introduce the cheerleaders; the representatives from each school; the officials; the two bands; and
